Pietramelara was founded by the Longobard Princes Landolfo And Adenolfo, but ruins dating to the 11th and 10th centuries BC have been found.

Pietramelara was part of the lands of the Abbey of Montecassino in the first half of the Middle age.  It subsequently passed to the feudal Lord of Roccaromana in the 14th century.  It then passed to the court at the death of Filippo de Roccaromana. The lands were fragmented and  Pietramelara was given to Eduardo Colonna and then to Federico Monforte. They embellished the castle transforming it in an elegant palace.
